Midori Goto

AVAILABLE WORKS

Midori Goto is a Sydney based artist. Working with ceramics using traditional techniques passed down by her family through spiritual practices, rituals and the traditions behind Zimbabwe and its history of ceramics, referencing building techniques seen in Great Zimbabwe through to ceramic practices dating back to the Iron Age.

'Muscle memory' plays into the idea that we all do things that feel familiar to some degree, whether the comfort from foods that have flavours you loved as a child, drawing patterns you’ve subconsciously been doing for a while the same doodle you occasionally do in a steamy glass shower, or making shapes in clay that feel familiar without knowing why. From the soft pastel pinks of Cherub ceiling murals inside Paris buildings, vanilla bean glaze, the fluffy green fields passing fast through car windows, countrysides in England, the baby blue water I look out to from my bedroom window or $2 lolly bags as a child from the local corner shop walking home, barefoot & salty after long days at beaches around Newcastle.

Forms we all see by or under the sea. The colours are always there, the shapes follow… it’s mental memory & muscle memory morphed into tangible time capsules of moments & feelings a lot like a photograph.
