Regine Bartsch

Born in 1951 in Hamburg, Germany, Regine Bartsch was raised in Finland and Syria. After attending the Free Art School in Helsinki, Finland, she studied at the acclaimed Kunstschule fuer Bildende Kuenste in Hamburg where she received both her BA and MA in Fine Art with a focus on textiles. Regine moved to Ireland in 1978, initially as the artistic adviser to the Ballinskelligs Tapestry Workshop. In 1981 she established her own studio in Cahirsiveen, Co. Kerry. She has since exhibited consistently in group shows and her solo exhibitions in both Ireland and abroad have been hugely successful. Her body of work ranges from large scale drawing installations to painting, tapestries, short films, sculpture and performance.

Her work has been consistently exhibited nationally and internationally, including London Art Fairs and the 2019 Venice Biennale. 'Like the German Expressionists of the first half of the 20th century Bartsch expresses her art with a direct passion. The visual impact of her paintings is alive, the pulsating colours ignite the meaning, the composition is intrinsic, the works are emotive, immediate. The paintings include a strong use of contrasting colours and Bartsch often includes a rhythm of claret red and Tibetan crimson. She works in many mediums and combines materials to create a sensual surface, irreverently stretching conventional technical rules. Paint is applied unadulterated directly from the tube, then it is by mixing on the canvas or by association of one colour next to the other that the energy of vibration is achieved. Bartsch's courage is evident in her intense concentration and thematic use of palpably vivid colours.' - Daphne Warburg Astor
