Rachel Farlow

Rachel Farlow’s abstract paintings are a deceptively rigorous exploration of the medium, where unusual colour arrangements and subtle gestures converge. Living and working in Victoria as a florist and nursery-hand, Farlow’s daily proximity to nature is foundational to her practice. The fragility of a withering petal and the vibrant energy of a bloom find abstract expression in her work, serving as metaphors for memory, time, and grief.

Her series, such as ‘Walk of life, night sweat,’ translate brief observations during times of personal loss. In these works, still life is a symbolic connotation of nature's fleeting cycles. Farlow’s process embraces improvisation, allowing sweeping dashes and strokes to relieve tension and transform positive and negative spaces. This approach arrives at a place where mark-making acts as a memory trace, grappling with the ephemeral and the unresolved. Her paintings, echoing the influences of artists like Cy Twombly, Howard Hodgkin, and Nicolas de Stael, capture a constant state of becoming—holding onto something strong, and then letting go.
