Gabriella Lo Presti

Interested in the banality of the everyday as both absurd and mystical – Gabriella Lo Presti creates microcosms that mirror the complexities of the human psyche and the precarious pendulum of truth and illusion. Lo Presti’s fascination with spirituality and superstition permeates her practice, infusing ordinary objects with an enchanted quality. Intrigued by themes of conspiracy and the blurring of fact and fantasy, her work often dances with hyperreality, where the boundaries between the real and the reproduced become indistinct. Her miniatures, paintings, photographs and sculptures are representations of the mundane and the surreal – they are themselves hyperrealities; an exploration of the duplicity of perception and the unreliability of images, capturing the unearthly in the commonplace.

Lo Presti has exhibited at Sydney galleries Mais Wright, Minerva and Galerie Pompom and interstate at the Centre for Contemporary Photography and Perth Centre for Photography. Her work has been featured in publications such as The Guardian, Artist Profile, i-D and the Sydney Morning Herald. Lo Presti has her MFA in Photomedia (2019) and BFA in Sculpture (2013) from the National Art School. She has been a finalist in the John Olsen Life Drawing Prize, I.P.F Photo Prize, the Blacktown City Art Prize, the CLIP and IRIS awards.
