Sam Stephenson
AVAILABLE WORKS
Sam Stephenson's journey in image making started in his teenage years, experimenting with black and white photography in a neighbour's darkroom. His approach to photography focuses on capturing the authenticity of everyday life rather than staging scenes. His portfolio reflects a subjective reportage style, documenting the lives of musicians, artists, and friends involved in skateboarding.
Beyond photography, Sam engages in various artistic pursuits. He publishes books featuring his work, exhibits ceramics, and continues to photograph extensively in Sydney. His latest exhibition, titled 'Colour Reversal' at China Heights, marks a return to ceramics. This interest in ceramics was sparked during a mental health art development workshop in 2014, where Sam discovered a meaningful outlet for his creativity.
Initially creating figures of celebrities and pop culture icons for his loved ones, Sam eventually transitioned to sculpting figures of his friends, imbuing them with equal significance. His artistic journey intertwines photography, ceramics, and a deep exploration of personal connections and creative expression.
