China Heights is proud to present a two person showcase of Hugh Van Schaick & Zephyr Larkin. Both artist work within the themes of self-reflection through observations of loneliness and fantastic escapism; using their respective processes of traditional figurative painting and illustrative based lino-cut printing.
Hugh Van Schaick
“In my current works I am interested in the space between people, whether it’s within a room, in a conversation or across oceans. Working during a time of such global separation and unrest, I have been considering divisions and distance. Lack of touch with our loved ones, forced separations, migration, extended detention, ideological conflicts, digital distance. We find ourselves reaching out but can’t grab a hold, and are forced to reconsider how to connect with others. Alone we are nothing, it is how we navigate and manage the space between us which dictates what we are.”
Hugh Van Schaick is an artist living and working on Gadigal Land in Sydney, Australia. He has been exhibiting in group and solo exhibitions since 2016. As both an artist and musician, his varied creative outputs feed into one another and allow him to filter the world through different mediums.
