24.08.18 Windows on our Progress

Cameron Emerson-Elliott

Stockroom

China Heights Gallery is pleased to present Windows on our Progress, an exhibition of new work by Sydney-based artist Cameron Emerson-Elliott. In his first solo exhibition, Emerson-Elliott will present 11 paintings on glass, alongside a selection of works on paper.

His most recent work has drawn upon an ongoing investigation into, and desire to understand, what traditions of art making he can legitimately lay claim to. Exploring familial links to Eastern Europe through Geographic DNA Analysis led Emerson-Elliott to begin working with enamel on glass last year - initially as a way to emulate traditional Russian lacquer paintings. In developing his process with the medium, he also began to draw in references to the history of icon painting, and the contemporary practice of Chicago Imagists Karl Wirsum and Jim Nutt.

Emerson-Elliott uses his multidisciplinary artistic practice as a vehicle to investigate, reflect on and connect with the world around him and the records of its peoples’ history. Over the past 22 years he has engaged in numerous mediums and approaches to art making. From his work in drawing, printmaking and artist bookmaking, sculpture, performance, installation, and soundwork - he has built a conceptually driven and process based practice.

Emerson-Elliott has also toured internationally and recorded extensively with the Aria Award winning indie-rock band Youth Group, and until recently was the Art Director at the Australian edition of Rolling Stone Magazine.
