Comic book images find their way into much of Zap Galaxy’s art. To him, the appeal is in their ability to transport the reader to another world. And in using them, he does, in fact, create his own, very singular world.
These images are approached in a painterly manner, resulting in a looser style than expected for the subject matter. Surface drips reference the hurried nature of graffiti; the flat perspective and rigid gaze of figures are drawn from his interest in mediaeval art. His fascination with 20th century architecture can also be seen; the New York skyline is almost there, but given the space-age and dreamlike qualities of someone seeing it from a much earlier time.
Well regarded internationally for his graffiti, Zap Galaxy, a graduate of COFA, is also an installation artist, sound artist, sculptor and painter.
