NGURAALAMI
Otis Hope Carey

NGURAALAMI grants viewers access to personal narratives which detail journeys and experiences derived from Carey’s life. The paintings featured in this body of work are reflective of the Op Art movement of the 1960’s championed by artists such as Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely, with the inherent influence of the traditional style and techniques of the Gumbaynggirr people of his community. A key influence on the works was the safe passage back to the country and to the dreaming by one of Carey’s family members after passing on. A series of metaphoric topographies trace fluid paths across the canvases to manifest the feelings and awareness of knowing a loved one has made it to their next path. The contour lines and movement of NGURAALAMI create a powerful viewing experience which marries visual immediacy with the spiritual and conceptual nature of Carey’s contemporary practice.
