  • China Heights Gallery (map)

For two years Henry Curchod has exclusively made paintings of water; reproducing one of nature’s most destructive yet reviving forces into a diverse series of abstracted schemes. In the wake of capturing and collecting thousands of images of water mass, Curchod developed an extensive visual language of painted aqueous patterns. This rigorous exploration of water's luminous and elusive qualities confront something inherent in the dialogue of abstract painting.

Ultimately the subject becomes disposable through the isolation and repetition of pattern and colour. Drawing from Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism, Curchod’s process explores a mixture of traditional and contemporary painting techniques. Through the act of veiling, Curchod layers transparent paint, loose brushtrokes, spraypaint and at times applies and removes latex in order to conceal and reveal previous layers. This complex application of paint renders the subject of water an expression of colour and light, eliciting the intangible and hypnotic nature of water itself.
